"Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman. I used to listen to this song late at night after gettin off the phone with this boy I really liked, I imagined that he would come pick me up and we'd drive until it got light out, and we'd watch the sun rise together. Cheesy as fuck eh?

Today (right now) I'm babysitting in Kensington (Berkeley hills, nice and rich, tons of gorgeous views). I reaaallly like the family, the mom and I hung out and talked for a while this morning before she left, she's really sweet. After I'm done here I'm going to jet on down back to downtown Berkeley and take BART in to the city and have a late lunch with a pal and possibly get some 40z and kick it in Delores park, weather permitting.

"3hours, 59min" by Jennah Bell. A Bay Area local, this is actually one of my friend's cousin! Thanks to Mr. Milon to introducing me to such an angelic voice. I love that this was filmed at BART! I really enjoyed this whole CD, it came out when I was in high school, and Bloc Party hit the charts with their single "Banquet", and while that's a great song and all, I really like the much slower indie songs from the album rather than the punch kick sort of angsty sound "Banquet" had.

So I got promoted to full time at my job at Body Time! And I'll be training how to do banking and inventory and stuff which is practically assistant manager! I'm so happy I don't have to juggle two jobs anymore. I'm a lil sketch about how I'll be covering this months rent but I always find a way. Music that I've been digging lately:

"Infatuation" By Zion I, at his album release party at Slim's a few weekends ago he did this AWESOME dubstep break in the middle of the song, it was pretty grand.

"Ya Mbemba" by Sam Mangwana. Dude, Sam Mangwana is amazing, my favorite album of his is "Galo Negro", you can get it on Amazon. But this song holds really good memories of late night family dinners on Sundays back in the day.

"Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show. Puureeetttyyy good country if you ask me. And the video is pretty legit as well.

"Cut My Wings" by Seasick Steve. Oh man, this old fart is so talented, so tight! I'm on a country trip right now.

Fired from Saul's, already got job at this bead shop called Bobbles and Beads, interviewed at Crossroads this morning and have a follow up interview with someone from Headquarters later this afternoon, score. Interviewing at Body Time tomorrow. Preferably I'd like to work at Body Time and Crossroads and quit Bobbles. Body Time and Crossroads are both on College and way close to my house, I could walk to both jobs in a matter of minutes.

The Wonders of New Roomies/The Beginning of Friendships

So I've got a ton of new roommates in my new house. We house 8 and we're still looking for two others to fill a room. It is a HUGE victorian house in Berkeley, and I am totally loving it. One of my favorite parts so far: Henry and Will: twins who were born in New Zealand, raised in LA, and went to high school in New Zealand. Why am I so exited about them you may ask? Not only are they completely charming, and they cook extremely well and appreciate food as much as I do, but they are introducing me to a shit ton of new amazing music. I have waited for this for so long!! Don't get me wrong, my last male roommate had good taste- but it was not my taste. Will and Henry's eclectic taste of music matches mine almost exactly, and they always know exactly what to play. They are a dream team come true! Some of the things they have exposed me to as of yet (and a few other things I've picked up over the past month or so, sorry for the late blogging- I've been workin my butt off at Saul's).

First and foremost: Das Racist. An SF and Brooklyn native combination. (Yes, Will and Henry know the stories of all the artists they dig- which I appreciate intensely). Extremely intelligent, the pair met Wesleyan University. They're album names are just extremely sarcastic and amazing such as "Shut Up, Dude" and "Sit Down, Man". Great songs, good raps, interesting beats and overall good rap.

They are great for listening to when you're on your way to work, when you're cleaning, etc. So awesome. So funny.

"The Naked and Famous" By Young Blood. Pretty good summer song. The buildup isn't thaaaat intense but it's still good enough that when you get there your movin your head and body a bit.

I finally got a job!!! I work at Saul's Restaurant & Delicatessen in North Berkeley. Also I have interviews at Body Time and Jigsaw-London this week too. Finally! And I've had to decline two other interviews because they are full time and I already know that conflicts with Saul's. Amazing. Finally.

Got to catch up on the phone with an old friend yesterday, made me totally miss him. We were pretty much attached at the hip for a while there. I had the most fun with that guy man. We were both broke and had all the time in the world. We found the most fun ways to have fun for free. "Ghetto Rock Skipping"...throwing rocks in a shallow nasty pool of storm water, stealing sandwiches from Safeway, stealing a pound of fried chicken and hot sauce hahahaa, bike rides, stencil work, watching full seasons of shows like Dexter in a matter of days, cooking the most amazing things from scratch, buying tall cans of PBR cuz they were the cheapest....I really enjoyed that man's company.

A ten year old boy just came up to me asking for money with a Street Spirit in his hand asking for anything I could spare. He told me his mom just lost his job and that she was sick and that he has a 3 year old brother who hasn't eaten anything today. I am very cautious who I give my money away to, but this kid was rail thin and sounded so embarrassed to even be asking...I gave him the ten dollars in my wallet...I hate this economy.

Crystal Castles, Lovers Who Uncover (The Little Ones cover). Great adaptation of the song, I was skeptical at first because Lovers Who Uncover has been a favorite song of mine for about three years now, but they did a really good job. The far away sound of the guitar is great!

So about two weeks ago I hung out with someone I've admired for about four years now. Very randomly, at like 1 oclock in the morning at that...ladies and gentleman, Mr. George Watsky. I had no idea what to expect, would he be quiet? Vivacious? Intense? Too intense? No no none of that. He picked me up, took me to Blakes on Telegraph (which I hadn't been to since my freshman year of college), and bought me a beer! We chatted, Blakes closed, and we went up to the Lawrence Hall of Science and checked out the amazing view of the Bay area. We talked about embarrassing stories, and it was great. Needless to say I was actually very very nervous the whole time, but it was amazing. When I woke up the next morning I seriously thought it was a dream for a little while. Here is a piece he did, my favorite in fact: "S is For Lisp", so great!

City Life

I love going to the city to get away for a couple days. So needed every once and a while. Even if it's just me and my friend sitting on his bed on our respective computers looking for jobs. Listening to good instrumental music and sipping coffee...ahhh life is crazy.

I was looking at old pictures of my life in Santa Cruz...My life is almost 100% different. I miss Neighborhood night on Tuesdays, playing pool at the Asti on Wednesdays, and Gay night on Thursdays! I miss drinking wine and watching movies with Laura and the girls. I miss the beach being a 5 minute walk away from my place, and having a 24/7 711 next to me...I miss it all.

I've been applying to every job I can think of, and had my first interview at a retail place called "Earthly Goods" in North Berkeley today. It's a little bit old for my taste but fuck it, a job is a job.

I'm going back to Santa Cruz this evening to see all my friends graduate this weekend! I'm so exited. My longtime fiance Laura is going to graduate along with friends Dominic, Kristina, Britt, Tim, Arash, Max, Jeff, Clint, and many others...Those mentioned are my anchor in Santa Cruz. When people ask me why I am going back to SC this weekend and I respond "for graduation", I keep having to add that it is for my friends because everyone I know keeps asking if I'm graduating...even though they know I would only be a junior...people are stupid sometimes.

If I had it my way, I would live in SF and work in the Haight...how sick would that be?

We stayed on a VERY small island, as in just our cabin and that was it. It was absolutely gorgeous.

A 19 year old in Petaluma (where I used to spend a lot of time in 2008) apparently ate a bunch of acid, got naked, and thought he could fly when he jumped off the popular Phoenix Theater downtown. Authorities still don't really know how the chain of events went down, but they believe he was slipped the acid in some food and didn't willingly take it. The Phoenix Theater (known for hosting shows/dances for local kids and young adults) was hosting a memorial dance for a teen who died in a skateboarding accident last year the night of this apparent dare to fly.
A quote from the article: "He was lying down when we found him but he jumped right up and was walking around," Gaffey said. "We didn't find any clothes on the roof. He must have gotten naked downtown. We're still trying to piece this together."

Over Thanksgiving break I got to get a lot of new music which I'm super juiced about. Everything I found was everything I've been looking for!

"Bruises" (originally by Chairlift) remix by Passion Pit. Suppperr good.

"What You Need" (originally by Priors) remix by Hey Champ. This song is soo chill! Perfect amount of chill beat, cool sounds, and a little bit of techno-ish sounding bits.

"Wrong Side of the Tracks" by The Slew. Super chill, remix to a really old school song. Suupperrr good for walking. Gets interesting around 0:40 and 1:11

"Whatever You Like" by Anya Marina. Who doesn't like a good acoustic cover to T.I. ?? It's actually a little more than just acoustic, it's really good.

"The World Has Turned And Left Me Here" by Bit Shifter. I LOVE the intro, it makes me feel like I'm in an old school nintendo game when I'm walking!

"Keepin Your Head Up" by The Ringers. So I know it's kinda lame that I got this song from the Accepted soundtrack but the band is actually really good, and especially this song.

"And The Boys" by Angus and Julia Stone. The girl's voice is a little much for me, but the song is really chill.

"Wicked Games" (originally by Chris Isaak. And get this- Chris Isaak and my dad went to high school together. And is the cousin of my dad's step sister...so what does that make Chris Isaak to me? Like...my third step cousin?) but THIS version is by Peter Joback and Sia. Super cool. They take the song to a totally different vibe than Chris's version.

"This Sweet Love" by James Yuill. Super good song. The guitar is cool. And the music video is pretty interesting as well :)

"Take Me" by Alan Pownall. Very feel good song, totally meant for walking around in the fall and stepping on crunchy leaves and feeling in love.

I feel like it was a million years ago, I swear.

I look at pictures and all I see is two people.

Two people that used to love each other so much.

That used to wake up in the same bed morning after morning.

A man that used to slip his arms under her resting body in the morning sunlight and squeeze her tight and whisper "I love you".

These pictures. I almost wish the didn't exist so I wouldn't have to see that girl who was so happy.

Pictures of these two people standing so close to each other in backyards of friend's parties. Of random kisses in cars, of quick glances at one another.

It only reminds me of how much I wish I was still that girl- so comfortable and content with the love she had found, real love, for once.

So comfortable. So, so, so comfortable.

So, so content that she had found someone that put up with her drunkin tears, her morning breath, her quirks and her fear of letting someone in.

So happy that she had found someone that made everything seem better than it had ever been before.

Someone who made the world a better place for her- where music sounded better, where she didn't care if she felt ugly that day because she knew there was someone who thought she was beautiful no matter what.

A world where she glowed with the feeling of love in her heart, her mind, her body.

Looking at pictures makes me sad to see that I am no longer that girl...but also makes me thankful that I had it, if only for a short period of time.

I can still remember the last time he said "I love you".

He was driving to work and to drop me off at the bus stop so I could visit my family...we both knew that when I went back to school things would change.

A quiet silence in the car- he reaches over, takes that girl's hand and kisses it slow and tender, and asks her: "You know I love you, right?"

She thought: "Now I do", she answered: "I know baby".

That was when they both decided that giving him a bit more time than they had been planning would be a good idea for them. They had a good month or so after that, but they both knew.

I didn't want it to end. I wanted to fight for the love I had found.

But maybe when you can't physically be with the one you love it wasn't meant to be.

Turns out he is moving to my town soon...

When we broke up we promised we'd stay close. That the second he was done dealing with whatever it was he was going through that I'd be the first person he'd call...

Now he's coming, and I know me and him will never be together again.

In the weeks after our break up I thought that we would for sure get back together, that being apart would only make us want each other more.

Turns out I was the only one thinking that, and while the world around me was changing so was he.

But sometimes I still look at these old pictures of us together, and I see two people I no longer know.

The girl in these pictures is not me now.

Everyone has to go through first love heartbreak right?

The girl in these pictures was a girl who was naive to the worlds potential of hurting someone who thought they could never be hurt.

I made him promise he'd never hurt me on purpose. And I know he didn't.

I took a leap of faith, with my heart racing and my guard up. I ended it with my heart racing, tears streaming down my face, a question of why? and a crash course in how to be hurt by the man you love the most.

He was my best friend, my man I could tell anything and I know he'd understand. My man that took care of me when I was too drunk and toweled me after a shower while I muttered "This could be so erotic if I wasn't so drunk" while he laughed.

He was my man. My boyfriend, my first love, my man that I would have done anything and everything for.

He left me with the most valued lesson in the whole world:

Love hurts, but it's totally, utterly, completely, insanely worth it. And time heals all wounds.

When all I could do was think of him, and how much he was hurting me- when I'd wake up in the morning and the first though I had was him and it would make me so sad that I couldn't fall back asleep....time has healed all of that.

Not to say I don't still think of him, because I do.

But the thought of him doesn't hinder me living my life anymore.

All I have to thank for that is time and friends.

It does still feel like a million years ago though even though it was less than a year. A lot changes in a year.

And whatever the future holds for me will be amazing, like the love I so briefly was lucky enough to experience.

Sometimes I wonder about why I could have possibly stopped writing?

Why I stopped using metaphors and thought about things for all their small bits and pieces.

I used to write daily, constantly.

Doodles and phrases and whispers of love for the smaller things in life that gave me the largest pleasures.

Like how my favorite coffee on this planet is from Sweet Adeline up the street from my parents house and over the course of my entire senior year of high school I perfected what I add into it to make it taste JUST the way I like it.

With a little bit of half and half and a dash of whole milk, three splenda-which I constantly get shit for using- and a SHIT ton of powdered chocolate.

I would write about the small shit like that because that coffee every morning before school was my way of controlling the whole day.

I was the one that chose what went into my coffee and no one else.

And when I would get to school I would stand across the street from it, light up a clove cigarette and just stare at the what I though then was the bane of my existance.

But now...

But now....

If I had only known what I know now back then.

That each day I spent in that god forsaken hell hole were the best years of my life.

With crappy lighting and overpacked hallways that place was my home.

I knew every bathroom to use when you needed to shit and every corner to makeout during classes.

Every tile of the C building, and every chemical in the dark room.

How those years slipped by too quickly I will never know.

Years spent loving people...some of them who's eyes I can't even remember.

But at the same time that kind of makes the eyes I do remember really mean something.

Like that boy- dark emerald green eyes with light flecks reaching and stretching out from his iris. His body was like a map to me. He had a freckle on his left palm that I was always jealous of- later I got one on my thumb and thought it was fate. He also had a freckle on his upper lip. I always wanted to kiss it, and at one point I did...a couple times in fact...his large freckled hand rested on my shoulder as we kissed. His hands were soft as silk when ever they brushed against my skin. He would sing to me on the phone every night as we talked about nothing for hours. It was like clockwork with him- called every night around ten o'clock (as I was watching a movie with my family- and I would leave). And we'd talk till we were both so tired that sometimes we'd fall asleep together on the phone...but then pretend it never happened at school the next day. One time we fell asleep together in the same bed and I woke up with his cheek pressed against mine and his arm around my hips...I know I was only 16 but god damn it felt superior to practically every thing else I've experienced since.

And why would I remember all these small details if they didn't mean they were really in fact the largest details of my youth?

The things I took so seriously in high school seem so...so fucking unimportant to me now but I can't shake the feeling that to me, in those moments, there was nothing more important than my friends and what I did with them. And I want that back.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to grow up yet. I'm 20 years old and I have no clue what I'm going to do with my life other than school.

I want that man still. Sometimes in high school I would imagine us somehow, sometime meeting again and every emotion we ever had for each other rushing back to our hearts. I still think about it sometimes. We talked on the phone for about a half hour last week, the first time in over a year...I realized after I got off the phone with him that I haven't seen him since high school. Two and a half years have gone by and I still think of him at least once a month. Yet there are people like...Jamie Herano- some girl in my graduating class- that I really just had to struggle to even remember her name.

What does that shit mean!?

"Blue Light" by Bloc Party. Bloc Party is a really good band, I haven't liked their newest stuff lately but their stuff from 2005 or so is really good. This song has the most amazing build up, I recommend listening to the full song.

"Courtship Dating" by Crystal Castles. Unfortunately, this is the only song of Crystal Castle's that I like. It's fuckin sweet though, perfect dancing around to. It's got that major angry but still happy feel to it. If you actually listen to the lyrics they are kinda dark, but the way the chick sings it makes it sound happy ish?

"She's Mine" by Brett Dennen. REALLY sweet song. The guitar is amazing and Brett's lyrics are the sweetest thing. It's perfect for falling in love <3

"Where The Damage Isn't Already Done" by The Radio Dept. This song is soooo amazing, especially the intro. This was like my favorite song my senior year of high school. The guitar and drums combine perfectly.

"Wake Up" by Arcade Fire. Might have heard this song in the Where The Wild Things Are previews that were out last Spring. Pretty legit song. Lyrics kinda make me wanna go rebel or something lol.

"Darkest Things" by The Submarines. Really good song. Mellow and relaxing, perfect for bubble bath times. The girl's voice is really good and the lyrics are interesting.

"Heart of Glass" by Blondie cuz she's the SHIT! Blondie is bad ass. I wish I was in the 80's, music was prime.

"Hang Me Up To Dry" by Cold War Kids. I chose this vid cuz it's live. Sooo good. Cold War Kids is an amazing band. My favorite part of this song is the lyrics by far at 1:00 and the guitar that follows at 1:20

"Do The Panic" by Phantom Planet. The version I have is some random live version that I actually like way more than this recording but it's still a really good song.

"Stay Up" ("Viagra") by 88 Keys. Guy sounds hella like Kanye, and this track happens to feature Kanye. But the song is good. The beat is the kind of beat you wanna walk with mad swagger to. It's also hella funny cuz it's about dudes not being able to keep up with the ladies.

"Can You Work With That" by DJ Quick ft. AMG. Baaad ass song. Makes me wanna roll Hollywood Blvd and pick up some chicks lol.

"Give It Up" (other wise known as "Dirty Hot Sex") by Pepper. Summer song up the ying yang. Hella funny. Guys in the band look like total douche bags but yeah.

"Ice Cream Paint Job" (acoustic cover) by The Cataracs. Sweet band from the East Bay. Niles and David are hella talented. Went to high school with these cats and they don't just do covers at all. They have some extremely awesome original songs. Their songs also have a new vibe to them that not many emerging bands have. Check out their myspace at myspace.com/thecataracs. And here is one of their originals: "Freakin Ta Ma Song" and it is just one of their many sweet songs lol.

"Candyman" by Cornershop. Featured in a Nike commercial :( but it's still bad ass. The underlying beat is heavy and sweet with some sweet instrumental and lyrics. This unfortunately isn't the full song, but you can download it on itunes.

"Jolene" (and also "Trouble") by Ray LaMontagne. This is a studio version, still really good, song doesn't actually start till around 0:45. Jolene is first, it is SO good. Ray LaMontagne voice is super amazing, easy to pick out of any song. Favorite lyric: "Jolene, I aint about to go stray. It's too late. Well I found myself face down in a ditch, with booze in my hair and blood on my lips. Picture of you holdin a picture of me in the pocket of my blue jeans. Still don't know what love means, still don't know what love means."

"Crips" by Ratatat. Really good, the build up is spectacular. Good for bike riding. Ratatat has such a great, very distinct sound. Super recognizable.

John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness

If you haven't seen this, you should. It's the first John Carpenter film I've seen in my film class this quarter that actually made me kind of scared to walk to the bus stop in the dark after. You'd think that something like Halloween would do that...uhh but no. So here's the paper I wrote on it. You are only going to understand it if you've seen it though....buuut it's on youtube so check it out. The part I discuss is the opening scene.

When Trent first comes in to the insane asylum in the first scene of the movie we are faced with a large, brightly lit, open space. We then follow Trent and the security of the asylum back to Trent’s new room- an enclosed, locked, dark, tiny room. This transition reflects the mental/physical transition Trent goes through throughout the movie.
The large, white, open area of the asylum is like Trent’s world before he has encountered the Cane case and gone to Hobb’s End. His world is Cane’s unwritten book at the beginning, filled with endless possibilities and undeniable liberties of Trent’s freedom as a person in “reality”. The lighting of the opening shot shows almost every detail within the frame- everything from the granite countertops to the details of the bowtie on the doctor. The camera angle of the frame also pans out far enough to see almost the end of the corridor with its massive amounts of doors- as to suggest the massive amounts of possibilities. When the camera is behind the doctor showing Trent hitting the guards, you see the other side of the corridor which also seems never ending- suggesting the question: Which door, and how far down did he come from? Does each door hold a different past for him? (Because as we know later in the movie, the story of Trent after coming out of Hobb’s End is mysterious- missing months of his life’s story).
When reaching Trent’s room you see the other locked doors to rooms holding a different patient, and possibly a whole different story. The whiteness of the cement hallway is no where near as bright as the corridor in which he has just come- instead it is dark with minimal overhead lighting and small windows. His life including the story with in the movie is now confined to one small, dimly lit room. Panning back out in to the corridor Trent’s screams reach that world of bright endless possibilities- much like Cane’s monsters are reaching out in to the “world of reality” and humans.
Trent’s cries of “I’m not insane!” provoke the rest of the patients to scream as well, causing a chain reaction of individual realities to spill in to the open space of the world reality outside of their rooms. The doctor blocks out these individual realities to the world by turning on and turning up The Carpenters. The act of him turning on something to block out the cries is his way of keeping out the stories of the “insane” that he is in charge of. The act of him turning up the volume suggests that maybe those cries of “not really being insane” are starting to become too loud and there fore possibly becoming his reality as well. For all we know, Trent’s delusion of monster’s coming in to the world of humans is becoming reality- and this is the doctor’s way of denying that fact and admitting that what he thought was insane is actually reality.

Trent’s small room and his reality slowly creeps in to the large corridor’s of the outside world. The world as he knows it seems to slowly become the world that everyone else recognizes and starts to believe.

He makes me nervous, he makes me not eat, he makes me second guess, he makes me ancy, he makes me not sleep, he makes my heart hurt, he makes me think too much, he makes me cry, he makes me second guess, he makes me act childish, he makes me flustered, he makes my cheeks red, he scares me, he makes me. He makes me feel. He makes me feel when I do not want him to make me feel anything at all.

His life is arbitrary to mine and mine to his.
